Therapy Dog Training For Goldendoodles

Willie Nelson is a Therapy Goldendoodle!

Are you wondering about therapy dog training for goldendoodles? Anyone with a goldendoodle in their life knows that they have an amazing ability to connect with people. As such, we’ve had quite a few of our sweet Rainfield goldendoodle puppy go on to get their therapy dog training, with some going even further and becoming service dogs. Today we are here to celebrate Willie Nelson, one of our Rainfield F1 goldendoodle dogs. Willie just passed his Therapy Dog testing and is eager to start visiting longterm care facilities in the fall. He says that it’s going to tough work having to visit all those friendly people who will shower him with love and pats and sometimes treats, but some dog has GOTTA do it, right? Good job, Willie! We are rooting for ya!

Tip – How to Get Your Doodle in Therapy Dog Training

Goldendoodles are smart, eager to please and love to learn, so if you have the time and want to share some of that doodle love with others in need in this way, therapy dog training for goldendoodles can be a perfect solution. We recommend starting early giving your goldendoodle puppy their basic training wit a good trainer (once they have their all their shots). Be sure to thoroughly socialize your puppy by taking them out and exposing them to a variety of real-life situations and a variety of people.

Once you get their basic training finished, if they’ve done well and seem like a good fit and temperment for therapy work, go ahead and keep going on their training. Get them into the intermediate and advanced dog training classes. Some trainers are able to give your goldendoodle the Canine Good Citizen Test, which your doodle will need to qualify for Therapy dog training. If your trainer does not offer this, ask them for recommedations of where you can get this. Once your goldendoodle has their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certificate, they will need to take a test to qualify as a therapy dog. Some trainers offer Therapy Dog Test prep classes to get your doodle ready for the big day. Once they have their certification, organizations like Paws for Therapy can get your connected to facilities looking for certified Therapy Dogs.

If you have the time (and a doodle), we hope you will consider therapy dog training for goldendoodles.

Remembering Valorie and Her Loving Appreciation of Service Dogs

I was thinking about my sweet grandaughter, Valorie, who left this world 4 years ago and thought I would do a post in her memrory and in appreciation of service dogs.

In appreciation of service dogs - cystic fibrosis awareness

For 18 years, my husband and I were blessed with being Grandparents to Valorie, our third grandchild. Valorie had so much going on in her life besides her battles with Cystic Fibrosis and her Lucy and Goldendoodle puppies were just one beautiful part of her life. She had a big hand in socializing and training the pups when she was with me, which was often in the early years. Sweet Valorie was often with me on ‘Gothcha Days’ when people would come to their new goldendoodle puppy. Valorie had so much to say that I often had trouble getting a word in edgewise as she would gave the new families a rundown of their new puppy. Valorie would make sure they had all the best tips for doodle care’ and knew what their care and training history had been so far. Each familiy was always so kind and patient as they listened to her sometimes lengthy explanations. .Val was blessed with a special connection with dogs, especially puppies. Our pups all loved Vaorie! I would often find her asleep on the floor with puppies sleeping all around her.

So today, as we remember sweet Valorie, apprecition of service dogs and the joy they added to her precious life seems like it goes hand in hand. Here are some our favorite pictures of her and her loyal companion and service dog, Lucy.

Tips on Training a goldendoodle puppy

cot training a goldendoodle doodle puppy

If you’re having trouble training your goldendoodle puppy, here are some tips I gleaned during my adventures training a goldendoodle puppy named Archie.

Little Archie is a three month old F1b goldendoodle puppy. I spent a few minutes each morning giving him some one on one training. Well, this moring he said “no way!”

I had clipped a leash on Archie for the first time and he immediately let me know it was the greatest insult. He squirmed, twisted and wiggled as hard as he could to get that contraption off of his little collar. Thankfully, I had equipped myself with a bag of small liver treats. He had been doing so well with everything else I had done with him so far, so it took me by surprize as he shook his head and refused to budge. It was so unlike him. But first — backtracking a bit….

The importance of the right treats

My dogs and puppies will do anything for a liver treat. I like to buy them fresh from the store, cook them up and cut them into little pieces. Yesterday, I caused quite a sensation at the grocery store. While shopping, the meat market people brought out packages of liver marked on sale. They no sooner placed the packages on the shelf, then I had transferred them all to my basket. I could imagine other shoppers’ thoughts on my extreme love of liver. Not many people eat liver now days. At times like this, I pretend no one is watching. What can one woman do with 25 lbs of liver in her shopping cart?

Leash training a goldendoodle puppy

Well, back to Archie, he initially refused to move. I placed a treat a foot in front of him and he still did not budge. I put him in ‘sit’ position and waited. I had time. After about 20 minutes of taking ‘1 ft moves’, he seemed to forget his resolve to make me sweat it out. He decided to follow. While I had been faithful with his daily training session, somehow I had neglected his leash training. I knew I had a bit of catching up but was not prepared for his staunch resolve. Good news though, it did not take long before we had lots of progress. I have to admit, those little liver bits, work wonders. They are ‘high value’ treats. He is sometimes opinionated at first but it is inspiring to see how quickly he catches on. We actually had a little run together on the way back home, on leash.

Training can be so much fun. He is such a good boy and is quick to learn. And, of course, he teaches me patience.

With summer kicking into gear, it’s the perfect time to adopt a goldendoodle puppy. Right now we have Archie and his sister, Cherish, Archie is a curly F1b goldendoodle puppy and his sister is a shaggy, wavy, goldendoodle. Both are expected to be small to medium standards. They are doing very well with potty training, crate training, and more, including, thankfully, leash training.

Tip – How do you make the goldendoodle in your life REALLY happy? Take those goldendoodles on vacation with you and encourage them to be one of those beach loving goldendoodles!

Noell, an F1 goldendoodle, enjoying the beach in Corpus Christi

Sweet Noelle had her first trip to the beach last week. Although she spent a good part of the week staying way AWAY from all that salty beach water in Corpus Cristi, the part she DID love was hanging with her two small charges, my grandkids, rolling in the sand, running along the beach and making sure no harm came to her very own “littles”. She will have sweet dreams when she gets back home.

Adopt an older goldendoodle

While goldendoodle puppies are a great joy, sometimes an older goldendoodle, like Noell, who is already past their puppy stage, is a better fit. Ocassionally we get older goldendoodles returned. It’s rare, but sometimes life changes happen and we do ask that our families contact us if they need to rehome their goldendoodle for any reason. We also ocassionally have goldendoodle and poodle parents of ours who are retiring and would love to have a home of their own.

If you would like to go on our list to adopt an older goldendoodle, contact me at laurie@rainfieldgoldendoodles.com.
